After watching Diggnation episode 234 (link) i though i’d try out Gowalla. I like to try out new methods of social networking especially if i can do it on my iPhone. Now i wasn’t really sure the purpose of it and after using it now for a few days i’m still not 100%.

As far as i can tell, it is a great method of keeping track of where your friends are and seeing other people that have been to places that you are going to visit. The program is international as you can add your own places of interest. You ‘check in’ when you arrive at a location and this can then update your twitter feed and facebook status. There is a game element to it in that you earn pins from completing various tasks such as adding 10 new locations and checking in 500 times.

This system seems very similiar to the foursquare system which has been around for a good few months so only time will tell which is the better. I’ve not used the foursquare system yet but in the interest of fairness i will try them both together and see which is the best.
